Glucose Management

Looking after your diabetes and living a busy life is not easy. How do your daily activities change your blood sugar?

Keeping track of your blood sugar levels is important because it helps you and your doctors and nurses know if your diabetes care plan is working or if it needs some changes.

As you track your numbers, think about what you doing and how that may have caused the number. Your blood sugar can change because of stress, exercise, what you ate, and when you took your medicine.

It helps to write down what’s happening in your life so that you can see how these activities may change your blood sugar.

List the time of day that you do certain activities and your blood sugar levels.

Bring your log book to every visit with your doctor, nurse, pharmacist or dietitian.

Why it’s high or low

You are not bad if you have high sugar numbers. High sugar numbers just tell you and your doctors and nurses that something is not working in your diabetes care plan.

Some reasons why you might have higher blood sugar include:
  • Eating too much carbohydrate food (such as potatoes and bread)
  • Being sick or stressed
  • Not enough diabetes medicine
  • Gaining weight

Some reasons why you might have low blood sugar include:
  • Not eating enough carbohydrate food (such as potatoes and bread)
  • Exercise
  • Too much diabetes medicine
  • Losing weight
