The month of November marks Diabetes Awareness Month. Although, it’s a little lesser known than Thanksgiving, this observance deserves equal recognition.
As the name suggests, Diabetes Awareness Month was created by the World Health Organization to educate the public on diabetes prevention and management information.
Wondering how you can get involved? Keep reading for a few ideas.
Join the conversation
If you look up the hashtags #NationalDiabetesMonth, you will see some commentary on diabetes management, education and prevention. You can be a wallflower and take the advice given in the chats or you can join in on the chatter! Your experience and tips are valuable, too!
There will also be a hashtag for World Diabetes Day on November 14, #WDD2018.
Get moving
In honor of Diabetes Awareness Month, many organizations like the Association of Diabetes Awareness are hosting walks to raise funds for diabetes care. You can find one if your area, or organize your own small event with friends and family. A little exercise would be good for you, too!
Take a stand
There are some organizations who are dedicated to initiatives that make diabetes management more accessible for all. You can get involved with causes like the Affordable Insulin Project by signing petitions, sharing information with your network or donating time or money.
Be a cheerleader
Blue is the chosen color for diabetes awareness. You can wear blue every Friday in November (and on World Diabetes Day) and share your photo on social media using the hashtag #bluefridays.
Spread your knowledge
Managing diabetes is not easy. While navigating diabetes, you will learn new tips, strategies and advice that woks for you. Use diabetes Awareness Month to share that with the world! You can be a part of a national effort to reduce the number of diabetes-related complications.
November is the best time to do it.
