Foods that lower cholesterol

Choosing healthy meals and snacks can help you avoid or lower LDL cholesterol. LDL cholesterol is bad for you and can lead to heart disease and stroke if you don’t control it.

Add some of these foods to your diet to help bring down bad cholesterol (LDL) and raise the good type of cholesterol (HDL) in your body.

  • Avocados. Put a few slices on your sandwich, add them to salad or make some guacamole.
  • Nuts. Try sprinkling some nuts, such as almonds, walnuts or pistachios, on your salad or eat a handful as a snack.
  • Whole grains. Oatmeal, barley and brown rice have a lot of fiber, which can help lower bad cholesterol.
  • Fruits and vegetables. Apples, oranges, lemons, okra and eggplant are all high in fiber. But any kind of fruit or vegetable can be part of a healthy diet.
  • Beans. Black beans, kidney beans, lentils and other types can all help lower cholesterol. Try some black bean burritos or dip some vegetables in hummus.

Sometimes diet alone is not enough to lower your cholesterol levels. Talk to you doctor about other lifestyle changes or medications you may need to help you live a healthy life.
