Diabetes can hurt your heart
If you are a woman and you have diabetes, your chance of getting heart disease is higher than women without diabetes. An unhealthy diet and not exercising are some of the reasons for developing type 2 diabetes.
The American Heart Association says that women with type 2 diabetes:
- Have heart attacks at earlier ages than men
- Are more likely to die after a first heart attack than men
- Are less likely to have their blood sugar or blood pressure under control
- Are less likely to use medicine to lower their cholesterol or blood pressure
Doctors at the Global Diabetes Program at Parkland recommend that women who have diabetes exercise often and eat healthy to protect their heart.
