Heart disease kills women too

Many people think heart disease only affects men or older people but heart disease is the number one cause of death for women in America. Heart disease can happen to women of all ages. To lessen your risk of getting heart disease, Parkland doctors say to follow these tips:

  • Have your blood pressure, cholesterol and triglycerides checked at least once a year.
  • Ask your doctor if you need to be tested for diabetes. Diabetes increases your chance of getting heart disease.
  • If you smoke, stop right away. Call 214-266-1235 to find out how Parkland can help you stop smoking.
  • Make healthy food choices. Eat low-fat meat and dairy, fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Lower your stress.
  • Exercise and move more.

Women can have different heart attack symptoms than men like pain in the neck, jaw, stomach or back. Don’t ignore your symptoms if something doesn’t seem right. See a doctor as soon as you can.
